Sleep of Death / This is so untrue and cruel

[ Sleep of Death ]

The dead are asleep until the resurrection. Jesus said, "No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended from heaven: the Son of Man" (John 3.13). No one is floating on a cloud, haunting old houses, burning under the earth, or beholding the face of God in heaven. At death the whole person ceases from life as God ordained it from the begining: "By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3.19). Resurrection is the only escape from death, which is why it is so often mentioned in the Bible. In contrast, the heaven-at-death concept is totally foreign and was the unfortunate result of the Church Fathers reading Plato into the Bible. The Hebrew concept of death is nicely encapsulated in the words of Solomon, "the dead do not know anything...there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going" (Ecclesiastes 9.5, 10).

Marla,
I am not sure of whether you were saying this was accurate or not when you address the "sleep of death" issue. I have not read anything about this phrase anywhere else so forgive me in advance if i misspeak here. The only way I could accept the "sleep of death" concept is if I believed man was a one dimensional being. However, man is a tri-part being created after the image and likeness of God. With God being Father, Son, and Spirit, (Three but ONE), man is also (Three but ONE). Man is spirit (the God part of man); Soul, (The thinking part, mind, feelings, etc of man); and Body (the tangible part of man known as flesh.) The same Bible which says the scriptures you gave above also say this, I don't have my Bible with me now, so I can't tell you where these verses are, but I am sure they are there. The Spirit returns to God who gave it, The soul that sinneth it shall die, and the body goes back to the dust. Just passing info along no offense meant at all. IN Christ, a Friend

Hey Friend,
No, I was not in agreement with this at all. I heard of others talk this way, of believing that the body stays in the ground until the rapture takes place. It has always upset me that people actually believe this. Thank You though for your thoughts on the matter!

Yes for many years I did, because this is what I was taught by man. But no I absolutely did not believe Mike when he said there was no rapture, until God showed me through much study on my own. But this article was mostly about how when a person dies they stay in the ground until the rapture and then their body rises to meet Him in the air. Which I have never believed that, even when I was a young child. I always knew the soul does not even go into that grave. Thank You!

You were taught by man? Doesnt God work through man? Wasn't the Bible written by man?

Yes it was, and that is why there is a lot of study to do when you are coming out of that dead religion. You need to get a Bible Concordance and start studying what some of those words that were put into the bible really mean. Man has messed with the bible so much that for all these years we were believing a lie. Please read in Galations with an open mind, and when you get to chapter 1 verse 12, really pay attention. Or you can stay in Mothers house as long as you need to, until Father calls you out. Thanks!

Wow what kind of a rock did this person that wrote about this sleep of death crawl out from under. Sorry to be rude..but man..that stuff is first grade mentality.. to believe that... you would have to never have had an original thought...or never actually studied the bible..not just read it!!!

That is about the ultimate in carnality...wow I do not even know if one should take the time to explain these verses... that were inserted... that whoever the writer is, does not have ONE OUNCE of spirituality!!!

Sometimes it is better to be thought a fool...than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!!

I mean what century are we in. Are people still that stupid, and carnal.

I am amazed...please start praying for God to open your eyes.

Marla,
Thanks for your response on this thought, I was pretty sure you were not agreeing with the "sleep of death" issue but since I came in in the middle I was just making sure. You have some thought provoking materials on this website for sure. Definitely not the Sunday School mentality I was raised with, PTL. It is about time we are starting to see an elevation in our thinking. It never ceases to amaze me how the church wants super sonic results on a Model T mentality. The two just won't gel together.

Anyway, thanks again for the quick response!
